Journeys of A Man

in the distance

I close my eyes
here I stand, in my grandfather's cornfield
Texas sun surrounded by a barbed-wire fence
but it's acres and acres of endless possibility
because it's all available to me
a lake and a barn
an old steel structure that holds old hardware
a few steps away, a well that's covered with old wooden planks

I take a breath
and open my eyes
only to inhale and close them again

Years down the line
I'm standing on a balcony
overlooking what's come and gone
so many things that have slipped through my hands
or was it that it was never meant to be
I'm standing in Nashville, Tennessee

And today, I hear the faint cries of a song
The beat starts in my heart
The strings are somewhere in the distance
The words are at my tongue
The breath to push them out is in my lungs
But today, I’m doubting if I’ll ever hear it played in full

Yes the world, my friends, is full
Full of possibilities
So full of possibilities
But also full of things that were never meant to be
